Q. Who Can Be a Member of Staff Council?
A. The staff of Appalachian State University shall consist of any permanent SPA or EPA Non-Faculty full-time or part-time employees.  Any member of the staff may vote and hold office in Staff Council.

Q. Where does fund-raising money go?
A. All monies raised go to Staff Council projects. Proceeds from our annual Silent Auction go to the Scholarship Fund. Monies raised for the Children’s Shopping Spree go to that fund. If you're ever in doubt as to how your donations are being used, ask a Staff Council member.

Q. If I'm not a Staff Council member, can I participate in the activities?  (For example: Children's Shopping Spree)
A:  Yes, if you are not a member you can still participate in any Staff Council activities.  Membership is open to all SPA and EPA non-teaching employees.  However, you must be a member of Staff Council in order to chair one of the committees.

Q:  What can Staff Council do for me?
A:  The members of Staff Council can be a voice for the campus community as well as for the General Assembly through the Staff Assembly representation.  Staff Council acts as a change agent and brings concerns and issues up for consideration.  Staff Council is an opportunity to get to know fellow employees across the campus through Staff Council committees that you might not work with otherwise. 

Q:  What is Staff Council?
A:  The Staff Council acts as a governing body for SPA and EPA non-teaching employees.

Q:  How much time commitment is expected?
A:  Staff Council meets once a month for approximately 1.5 hours.  Staff Council meeting schedule   Members are required to serve on two Staff Council committees.   You are encouraged to serve as a communication link between the Council and those you represent in your work area.

Q. "How can I get involved in Staff Council?"
A.  First, attend a meeting.  Staff Council meetings are open to all employees.  Contact one of the officers or committee chairs to see how your skills may assist the Council.  Take a look at the Staff Update to obtain ideas on how you might get involved. 

Q. "What has ASU Staff Council done/achieved in the past?"
A.  Twice a year Staff Council meets with both the Chancellor and the President of the UNC system.  This is accomplished through the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee at ASU and the Staff Assembly at the State level.  To see more specifics, see the recent Annual Reports.

Q. If I join Staff Council, do I have to use vacation or comp. time to account for time at meetings?
A.  No, you cannot use vacation or comp. time while participating in Staff Council meetings.  Employees may participate with approval from their direct supervisor.  All time spent at meetings and activities are considered work time.  You cannot accrue any overtime through participation in activities spent with the Staff Council.

Q. What is the term limit for a Council member? 
A.  Members are expected to serve 1 two-year term.
